June empties

june-emptiesPixi Glow Mud Cleanser | I won this in an Instagram giveaway, and I quickly fell in love. I’m not a huge fan of the scent, which is pretty heavy, and kind of old-ladyish, but everything else about it is lovely. It’s gentle and non-foaming, but it leaves my skin feeling cleansed. Since I replaced the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser with this (and started using the Pixi Glow Tonic) my skin has changed dramatically. For the longest time, I was getting consistent breakouts on both cheeks, and now they’ve all but stopped. Unfortunately, Pixi seems to be one of those brands that can never keep anything in stock, and when I finished up this tube, I was on a frantic hunt all over the internet trying to get a new one. I eventually found it on Amazon for double the price. Who knows what I’m going to do when I finish up that bottle 🙁

Derma E Hydrating Night Crème | I thought I wasn’t going to repurchase this moisturizer after I used it up, but I did! The main thing I don’t like about it is the scent. To me, it smells strongly of artificial blueberry, which I don’t hate, I just prefer unscented products. It also contains dimethicone, and I prefer silicone-free products. It seems to work well with my skin, however, and I repurchased it.

Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA ++++ | This has been my go-to SPF for quite a while now. It doesn’t irritate my skin, and I like the light citrus scent. I also think it works well under makeup. I’m currently working my way through another tube of it (I always get the 2-pack from Amazon), but I’m going to try something else after I use it up because I don’t like Bioré as a company.

Dr. Carver’s Easy Shave Butter | I’m not too fussy about my shaving creams, as long as they’re not heavily scented. This one was a non-foaming, gel/lotion formula that I really enjoyed.

First Aid Beauty Cleansing Body Polish | I really liked this body scrub. The first time I used it, I was surprised by how “charcoaly” it smelled, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I loved that it didn’t feel too harsh, and that the scrubbing created a lather. I bought this in a set with the Slow Glow Self-Tanning Moisturizer:

First Aid Beauty Slow Glow Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizer | I’m not really big on self-tanning, but for whatever reason, this year I decided to try it out. I liked how this was basically unscented, and it was very moisturizing. I started noticing a tan from it after only two or three days. After about ten days of daily use, I did see some unevenness and streaking, and I’m not sure if that was the fault of the product or because I didn’t blend the lotion in well enough. After that, I stopped using it daily and cut back to 2-4 times a week. I don’t think I would repurchase this, even though I thought it was pretty good. It was kind of pricey – I got this in a set with the body polish for $44, and they were even more expensive if purchased separately. They didn’t last very long, even after I stopped using them every day. I did like being more tan this summer, but I’m going to look for a different tanning product.

Anastasia Brow Wiz in “Dark Brown” | You can see from the picture that this Brow Wiz doesn’t look normal, and that’s because the spoolie annoyingly broke off after about a week of using it. Apparently this is a very common problem, and it’s prompted me to look for alternatives even though this is my holy grail eyebrow product. So far, I’m still searching for something that’s as good of a color match for me. Hopefully Anastasia fixes the packaging problem soon.

Wet n Wild Max Volume Plus Waterproof Mascara | If you read my last post, you’ll know that this is my favorite mascara, and I’ve already moved on to a new tube.

Those are all the products I used up in June! I hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

Mascara Clear-Out

mascara-clear-out

mascara-clear-out-2I’ve been reaching for the same mascara every single day for months. The Wet n Wild Max Volume Plus Waterproof Mascara has been my go-to pretty much since the day I bought it. It meets all my criteria for a great mascara: semi-dry formula, holds a curl extremely well, waterproof, separates and elongates lashes, and is easy to remove. I figured since this is really the only mascara I use (the Heroine Make mascara is sticking around for special events), I might as well purge my collection of the not-so-great ones. Let’s jump right in:

It Cosmetics Hello Lashes | This is a pretty mediocre mascara. It doesn’t provide much volume, and it doesn’t hold a curl at all. I’m also not a huge fan of the spikey ball on the end of the brush. I always get mascara on my eyelids with brushes like this.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes | Hello clumps! I really dislike this mascara. It’s so thick and gloopy that I have to spend way too long brushing through my lashes with a lash comb to remove the clumps. It also has a very strong scent, and well, I prefer not smelling my eyelashes. It also doesn’t hold a curl at all, which is the number one thing I look for in a mascara.

Wet n Wild Max Fanatic Cat Eye | This one wasn’t as disappointing as a few of the others. I also like the brush, as I find it easy to apply to both eyes. I usually have a bit more trouble applying mascara to my left eyelashes because I could never get the hang of turning my hand around and holding the brush backwards, so I like the comb shape of this one. I’m tossing it because I’ve had it for quite a few months now, it doesn’t hold a curl super well, and it does flake a little bit throughout the day.

Jordana Best Lash Extreme | I think I need to give up on non-waterproof mascaras. I don’t think I’ve really loved a single one throughout the years. This is another mascara that I found to be mediocre. It’s a thick, wet formula that clumps up very easily and has to be brushed out with a lash comb. This type of mascara always flakes off on me. Not a fan.

Bare Minerals Lash Domination | I know this one was just a sample, but I didn’t like the tiny brush. I also didn’t like the super wet formula that made my lashes point further downward than if I was wearing no mascara at all. This one was a big fail for me.

Really, all I really want is for my lashes to stay curled throughout the day. If anyone has any recommendations for cruelty-free waterproof mascaras that hold a curl, I’d love to hear them!

Beauty, Caila's Favorites

February beauty favorites

febfavorites2016Surprisingly, I don’t have too many favorites this month despite trying so many new things. I guess I’m still forming opinions on most of them. Here are five products that did manage to solidify a place in my heart:

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette | I’ve actually had this palette for over a year, but I don’t think I’ve ever featured it as a monthly favorite. I especially like Dim Light; I’ve been using it to set my concealer around my eyes, and it’s the least detectable powder I’ve ever used. It gives the skin an airbrushed look, which, for someone with large pores like me, is a godsend.

Wet n Wild Max Volume Plus Waterproof Mascara | This is one of the best mascaras I’ve used, and also one of the cheapest! I wouldn’t say it’s the most volumizing mascara out there, but it holds a curl well and doesn’t make my lashes look spidery. It’s a great every day mascara that I’ll definitely be repurchasing.

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser | I’m actually surprised by how much I like this cleanser! It’s the gentlest cleanser I’ve ever used, and I like that it can be used as a first step, makeup-removing cleanser, or as a regular cleanser on dry skin. It removes mascara well (I’ve used it to remove the Wet n Wild waterproof mascara, and it gets almost all of it) and it doesn’t strip my skin or make it feel tight at all.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick “Pretty Natural” | I know I’m not supposed to be buying more lipsticks, but…I guess I don’t have an excuse. I just wanted a new lipstick, okay?! This is a great natural color. I wouldn’t say it’s a “my lips but better” shade, because it is a slightly warm pink, but it’s definitely not bold. The formula is very good; it slightly stains the lips, so it continues to look good as it wears off.

Wet n Wild Contour Brush | In my review of the new Wet n Wild brushes, I mentioned that this one was probably my favorite of the bunch, and it continues to be. Aside from a powder brush to set my concealer, this is the only other brush I’ve been using. It’s super soft, and the bristles are very flexible, almost wispy. It’s great for when you want your contour and/or bronzer to be super blown out and blended.

What were your favorites this month? By the way, if you aren’t following me on Instagram, please do! I’m starting to post mini reviews on things like sheet masks that don’t really make it to the blog.
