Review: Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Lip Treatments

Even though I wasn’t in the market for more lip products, I was intrigued by the Milani display in the new releases section of Walgreen’s. I suppose since my lips (whole body, really) have been frustratingly dry lately, “moisture lock” sucked me in. The colors and the packaging looked pretty, so I picked out the two shades I thought would be most flattering on me, 06 Revitalizing Grapefruit and 07 Protecting Pomegranate. According to Milani’s website, each lip oil has Jojoba, Avocado, and Tsubaki oils, and each one is infused with its own added oil to target specific concerns.

Straight home I went to test them out, and I was immediately disappointed. These have no color on the lips whatsoever! Maybe I’m crazy, but I expected some color, or at least some way to tell them apart. Aside from both being completely clear, they smell almost identical, and they both feel exactly the same on the lips. Of course, I didn’t want to count them as a total loss, so I did decide to keep them for a bit to test them each out, and there are definite pros and cons.

Pros: They are moisturizing. They give the lips a shiny gloss look without being gloopy or overly sticky. I also wouldn’t say they feel “oily” either; they’re like a normal lip gloss in most ways. Personally I like the scent, which to me is dead on for strawberry Jolly Ranchers. There is also no noticeable taste, which I prefer because it prevents me from licking my lips leading to more dryness. The packaging is quite pretty, and I actually like the extra wide applicator, which seems to be the same, or very similar to that of the Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils. They last on the lips a decent amount of time, about two to four hours if you’re not eating and drinking a lot. Milani is a cruelty free brand, and these lip treatments are all vegan.

Cons: To me, these seem like a gimmick. I like the concept of lip oils for sure, but if you’re going to come out with eight “shades”, make them distinguishable from each other in some way. Each of the eight lip oils is supposed to do something different for your lips, but if you read the shade names, they’re all synonyms for the same thing: moisturizing. The two I have look and feel exactly the same on my lips, and really, what else do we want a lip oil to do for us?

In conclusion, I don’t think these are bad at all for a lip gloss. They’re moisturizing, pleasant on the lips, and smell nice. If you’re in the market for a moisturizing, clear gloss, definitely pick one up, but just one!

Purchased at Walgreen’s for $8.49 each.

2016 Resolution – going cruelty-free!

This is my first post in quite a while! Since October, I’ve decided to self-host my blog, install a pretty new theme, and get more serious about posting regularly. As far as beauty goes, I’ve fallen in love with Asian skincare, and I’m making a commitment to only spend money on brands that do not test on animals. As it happens, a few days ago, Korea announced that they are working to ban all animal testing on cosmetics by 2018! I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. In only the past four months, many of my regular skincare products that I’ve used for years have been replaced by Korean ones.

As for why I’ve decided to go cruelty-free, well, as I get older and have more disposable income, I want to support companies with good business practices, and I can’t justify giving money to companies that continue to test on animals unnecessarily. I also realized that in the past few years, I would spend so much money on products just for the sake of having something new, and now, hopefully, I’ll be forced to be a bit more discerning in what I buy. Since I received some non-cruelty-free gifts over the holidays and still have a lot of products I haven’t found cruelty-free replacements for, I’m not making this blog a CF exclusive place, but it is my intention to get to that point eventually. In the meantime, I hope you stick with me in this in-between stage!

Alright, I’m off to work on some new posts and maybe an editorial calendar (eep!). Happy belated New Year!
