Empties #3

I’ve been saving up my empties for an embarrassingly long time this time around. Hopefully I can keep this somewhat short!

DevaCurl No-Poo | This is one of my favorite curl-friendly shampoos. It has a pleasant “spa” scent that I love, and it’s very gentle. I haven’t repurchased it in a while simply because it’s quite expensive, and I tend to use it up very quickly.

Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner | I loooove the entire Trader Joe’s Tea Tree line. I regularly buy the bar soap and the body wash. They’re so refreshing! This bottle is pretty huge, it lasted forever, AND it’s super cheap! I will definitely repurchase it sometime in the future.

L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil | This is my all-time favorite body wash. The scent is pure heaven. It starts as an oil, then lathers up into a soap. Since I can’t seem to find my go-to shaving cream, I’ve been using this for shaving too, and it works wonderfully! The one downside is that it’s expensive, and I always use it up so quickly.

Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation | Ah, my holy grail foundation! This bottle lasted forever. I’m talking almost two years despite it being my most-used foundation. It’s a great medium coverage foundation that looks natural, doesn’t accentuate dryness or break up on me. Love, love, love.

Boscia MakeUp BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil | I was not in love with this product. I used it to remove my makeup, and the first time I used it, the scent was so strong it burned my eyes. After I got used to it, I found that it removed my makeup well and did a decent job of cleansing, but it didn’t wow me. It’s quite expensive and I didn’t think it was any better at removing makeup than plain ol’ jojoba oil.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer | This is still my favorite concealer. It’s creamy, and it covers blemishes and dark under eyes very well. I’ve just never found anything better!

Soap & Glory Hand Food | I carried this hand lotion around in my purse for a couple months, and I thought it was a pretty decent moisturizer. I’m not sure why, but I never like the scent of Soap & Glory’s products, Hand Food included. They are just too sweet and cloying for me. I would not repurchase this for myself, but I think it’s a good product.

Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment | This was a sample size, but it lasted forever! I’m always on the search for a killer lip balm, and I really liked this one. I thought it was very moisturizing, and it had great staying power. The scent is also lovely: lemony and sweet. The only thing I would note is that it seemed to get a bit melty and soft quite easily. Sadly, I don’t think I would ever buy a full size; I don’t think I can justify spending $25 on a lip balm.

Maybelline The Rocket Waterproof Mascara | No matter how many mascaras I try, I always come back to this one! I think I’ve repurchased it at least five times. It holds a curl like nothing else, and it’s volumizing without being clumpy.

Maybelline Age Rewind Eraser Concealer | I really like this concealer, but I don’t think I love it as much as everyone else seems to. I have to use it sparingly or I find that it accentuates any texture I may have under my eyes due to dryness. I did repurchase it because I think it does a good job of brightening my under eye area.

Anastasia Brow Wiz | I think I’m on my third or fourth Brow Wiz, and I may need to repurchase it again soon, which I will happily do because it is simply the best brow pencil out there.

Have you tried any of these products? Let me know your thoughts!

Disappointing Products

Covergirl The Supersizer Mascara | I had really high hopes for this mascara because I’d heard a lot of good things about it, but I absolutely hate it! It is by far the clumpiest mascara I’ve ever tried. The bristles on the wand are almost nonexistent, so the product goes on in one huge glob. I forced myself to try using it three or four times, but every time I applied it, I had to rush to use a lash comb to remove 99% of the product before it dried on my lashes and fused them into a giant clump. It was a huge mess each time. I’m at a loss as to how anyone likes this mascara!

The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter | This is more of a personal preference, but I just cannot get past the scent of this one. As far as being moisturizing, this body butter is fine. I found the fragrance to be sickeningly strong, like orange wood cleaner. Also, I don’t think I’m really a body butter type of lady because I really dislike moisturizers in tubs in general; they’re just too messy!

Maybelline Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation | I feel like I may have liked this foundation earlier this year before my skin became crazy oily. As of now though, it just does not agree with my skin at all. It clings around my nose and goes whitish, accentuating any flakiness. Yes, I have super oily skin (in places) that is also flaky…joy! It also breaks up and basically slides off my face within two hours. By the end of the day, my face is a complete oil slick. I may keep this to try it in winter because I really hate giving up on foundations.

Milani Easybrow – Dark Brown | I tried this brow product a while back before giving in and getting the Anastasia Brow Wiz. It’s similar to the Brow Wiz in that it’s a twist-up pencil with a spoolie on the opposite end, but it does not compare to the Anastasia. First of all, the nib is quite a bit larger, too large, I would say, to create a natural-looking brow. The color of the pencil is also very warm – almost yellowy, as opposed to the ashy dark brown that looks most natural on me. I also found it to be quite slippery during application. All in all, it was really difficult to achieve the kind of look I like for my brows with this product.

That’s all! Have you tried any of these products? I would love to know if any of you got the Supersizer mascara to work for you! Please help me understand the hype!

New makeup storage

For the past few years, my makeup storage has been a tiny Ikea cart outside my bathroom door. Not so glamorous, and not very practical or organized. Last month, after doing some research and stocking up on Muji drawer organizers, I finally dragged my husband to Ikea and picked up the MALM dressing table. I know, I know, all I need is a set of ALEX drawers, and I’ll be a real beauty blogger! Seriously, though, I do like the ALEX drawers and might pick up a unit some day. For now, I’m happy with my dressing table, and its limited storage is good for keeping my collection in check.

DSC_6898DSC_6912My favorite things are probably the two mirrors. The round light is the KAITUM light from Ikea. I love that it’s battery operated. The hanging mirror is from CB2. It’s so pretty. I did originally want one of those ridiculous “Hollywood” lighted vanity mirrors, but they’re like $400! I’m quite happy with my little shelf mirror; I think it’s adorable, and I love putting a few of my favorite trinkets on it. Right now I have my Thierry Mugler Alien perfume, my teensy Chloe Eau De Parfum, a Richie Tenenbaum pin from an art show, and an amethyst (my birth stone).

It’s pretty modest, and I don’t have a cute stool yet, but I’m pretty happy with it!

August Favorites

Things have been quiet on the beauty front around here the past few months because honestly, I’ve been using the same things every day for…a really long time. It’s only recently that I’ve picked up a few new products I’ve been excited about.

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue | This is a really interesting face product that’s become a staple on lazy days. It’s light coverage, but it covers just enough for those good skin days. It blends into the skin really nicely, too. It doesn’t last all day on me, but this summer has been so hot and humid, I don’t think a product exists that could last all day. I think I’m going to really love it in fall and winter for when I need a little bit of moisture along with something to even out my skin tone.

Hard Candy Plumping Serum Gel Stick #854 Desired | I picked this up when I went to Wisconsin in June. Since there’s no Walmart in New York, I can’t get my hands on Hard Candy too easily; in fact, this is the first and only Hard Candy product in my collection. I’m really happy I picked this up because I love it! I’m so impressed by how comfortable it is on the lips and how well it wears. It’s a very opaque and somewhat bright color (for me) which made it the perfect color to wear this summer. I definitely want to pick up a few more of these the next time I find myself in Walmart.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfecter Champagne Pop | I had to give in to the hype on this one, I just couldn’t resist! The weirdest thing is, I’m not even a huge highlighter fan and I didn’t watch Jaclyn Hill’s videos before I heard of this collaboration. But when everyone, and I mean everyone raves about something, including the people whose opinions on makeup I hold in very high esteem, I knew I needed this. Happily, it lives up to the countless rave reviews. It gives a perfect pop of shine, and it’s a great warm shade that I think would look great on almost every skin tone. I also have to hand it to whoever named the product because I don’t think there is anything that could describe it better than “champagne pop”.

Beautyblender | The Real Techniques Complexion Sponge has been my most used makeup applicator for ages, and I still like it a lot, but I was getting annoyed at the little chunks of orange sponge that would end up on my face or in the sink as I washed it. I’d never used the original Beautyblender, but I knew it had to be a longtime favorite for good reason, so I figured I’d finally try it out to see if it was better than the Real Techniques counterpart. The (sometimes) frugal part of me hates to admit it, but I like the Beautyblender more. As soon as I felt it, I could tell it was made of much better quality material. I’m not sure if it actually applies makeup better, but knowing that it won’t shed and break apart on me is enough to know that it’s a good investment.

What are your thoughts on these products? Does Champagne Pop live up to the hype for you? Let me know!

Mini European Makeup Haul

As soon as I knew I was going to Europe for my honeymoon, I started making a mental list of all the products I wanted to pick up during the trip. There were two brands I absolutely had to check out: Bourjois and Kiko. While it is possible to get Bourjois in the US through Asos and Amazon and probably other sites, I wanted to check out the products in store. And waiting years and years to finally get my hands on them made it all the more exciting :). Lucky for me, there was a Bourjois sale going on in Boots, so I picked up two foundations and two lip products. Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation is probably the most universally-loved foundation I’ve heard raved about by UK beauty bloggers since I started getting into makeup, so that was a no-brainer. I also picked up the Healthy Mix Serum Foundation. The lip products I picked out were both from the Rouge Edition Velvet range. After quite a bit of indecision, I chose #11 So Hap’pink and #03 Hot Pepper. I had also heard lots of great things about these, especially Hot Pepper. Unfortunately, I haven’t been impressed by them so far. They are so crazy slippery on my lips! They also pretty much disappear after eating or drinking. Do you have any tips for getting the most out of these because I’m just not feeling them.

I also went all over London stopping into every Superdrug I saw to look for Tanya Burr’s lip glosses. These must still be super popular because they were completely out of stock everywhere except for one lonely little tube in Afternoon Tea. While the formula seems really nice, the color is lighter than I normally go for. I also wanted to pick up some things from the Zoella Beauty range, but I couldn’t take the body spray or lotion with me since we were only traveling with hand luggage. At least these ranges are available on Feel Unique if I ever feel like I HAVE to have them.

I had lots of fun perusing the Kiko shop in Venice. They have so many lipsticks it’s insane. In the end, I went for something completely unique – the Long Lasting Colour Lip Marker in 103 Peach Red. This is just what it sounds like, a marker for your lips. While I was excited to try it, it was a bit of a let down. It’s a very thin, watery consistency that goes on pretty streaky. It does last forever though. I think the swatches from testing it in store lasted three entire days. I also picked up a pretty eyeshadow quad. The Color Fever Eyeshadow Palette in 100 Unexpected Rosy Taupe is made up of three shimmery purples and a shimmery champagne. The formula isn’t up there with the likes of Urban Decay, but it’s still very impressive for the price. I also picked up a Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadow in 06 Golden Brown, which is a really nice bronzy gold. I was happy with the color and staying power when I wore it the first time the other day. The last item I picked up was the Crystal Eyeliner in 03 Reflect Burgundy. This eyeliner is so insanely beautiful. I haven’t used it yet, but I really hope the formula lives up to the color.

I’m pretty happy with the makeup I picked up. While I wish I had been able to get a few more things, I was limited by the weight of our hand luggage, and all the souvenirs and gifts we got were already becoming really heavy within the first several days of the two week trip. There’s always next time though. Europe, I WILL be back!

Two makeup looks featuring Colourpop

It’s been two weeks since getting my Colourpop products in the mail, and I’m still excited about them! I promised to share some looks and opinions on them, so let me get it out of the way and say that overall, I’m impressed. Surprisingly, the blushes are my favorite. Hot damn are they pigmented. I struggle to find a way to apply them that isn’t “too much”. They may not look over-the-top in these pictures, but unlike most blushes I use, they actually show up in photographs, which is something I’ve complained about before. Let it be noted that I did pick out two of the absolute brightest shades they offer, so I’m sure a more natural look can be achieved with colors that aren’t neon magenta or tangerine.

The Super Shock shadows are also really, really nice. I’m only using one of the shadows (in the first look), but both of the ones I have are lovely. They are easy to apply, blend, and sheer out, but you can also easily pack on more color for more intensity. The colors I picked out have almost a duo-chrome effect, which I like since I don’t have many other shadows that offer something similar.

The Lippie Stix are where I have mixed feelings. They’re very pigmented and easy to apply, and the scent is pleasant. Staying power and wear are where I was a little let down. I do find that they settle into lip lines and fade sort of quickly. They are also a bit drying, and leave my lips flaky by the end of the day. I will say that these are things I struggle with when it comes to most lipsticks, so YMMV. For $5 each, I really can’t complain that much as they’re cheaper than most lip products at the drugstore are these days.

Keep scrolling for my two makeup looks. In the first look, I used a bit of green shadow on the lower lash line to emphasize the green sparkle in the Colourpop shadow on top. I really like how it turned out paired with the deep berry color of the Lippie Stix in LBB. In the second look, I did something warmer and springier, AND I USED FALSE LASHES FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER OMG. Seriously though, the application is not perfect, as you can probably see, but it was sooo much less scary than people make it out to be. I was so excited that I actually did it without getting the lash stuck to my eyebrow that I forgot to tightline, but anyway, I really like how fresh and dewy the second look is.
