Tarte Kiss & Belle Lipsurgence Lip Set – Photos, Swatches, and First Impressions

tarteset2tarteset

During the recent Sephora VIB sale, I treated myself to the Tarte Kiss & Belle Lipsurgence Lip Set. I totally did not need any more lip products, but I’ve never tried any from Tarte before, and it seemed like a really good deal ($34 for a $100 value). I decided to do some lip swatches (my first time trying this) and share my first impressions in case you were thinking of picking this set up as a gift for the holidays.

This set includes eight limited-edition minis: two matte lip tints (Eternal, Fancy), four regular lip tints (Dreamy, Alluring, Innocent, Dainty), and two lip glosses (Kiss, Belle). They are mostly neutral pinks and berries in the same color range. The lip tints are .056 ounces each, and the glosses are .05 ounces each. To compare, the full-size lip tints are .1 ounce each and cost $24, and the lip glosses are .27 ounces and cost $19. So, without going into all the in-depth calculations, you can already tell that $34 for all eight products is quite a good value.

Let’s get into the swatches.

Thoughts: several of the shades are very similar, namely Kiss, Alluring, and Innocent. Dreamy, Belle, and Fancy are also quite similar to each other, which isn’t to say I don’t like them, but I think a little bit more variety would have been nice. The lip crayons have a slight minty scent and are ever so slightly tingly on the lips. The glosses have a sweeter scent, like cake. I like the formula of all the products. I found that they all applied very smoothly and evenly. I recently wore Innocent out, and I found that it had lovely staying power and remained comfortable and felt moisturizing on the lips. So far, my favorites are the two matte tints, Eternal and Fancy. I like Eternal because it’s the one product that doesn’t fit into the neutral/berry range. They are also very comfortable and moisturizing for matte products.

Pros:

  • Great value
  • Great quality products
  • Comfortable and moisturizing on the lips
  • Good variety of finishes
  • Good for traveling

Cons:

  • Lack of color variety
  • Packaging mistake on Alluring*

Overall, I think this is a great set if you’re someone like me and has never tried Tarte lip products before. It would also be great for someone who tends to lean toward “safe” lip colors – there are no over-the-top bold colors here. I think you do have to be a lip product lover to enjoy this set as a couple of the colors are redundant and would probably sit around unused by someone who doesn’t like to change things up too much.

*One important thing to note that was disappointing. The packaging on Alluring says that it is matte. It is definitely NOT matte however, and I wasn’t sure if this was a packaging error or if the product was just not great. Alluring is labeled as a regular lip tint on Sephora, so it turns out this is a packaging error.

What do you think of the colors? Will you be picking this up for the holidays?
