Recent drugstore purchases + first impressions

recentpurchases

I’ve picked up a few things from the drugstore over the past few weeks, and I thought I’d share my first impressions with you.

Milani Easybrow “Dark Brown” | I originially went looking for the Almay brow pencil, but it was nowhere to be found in Rite Aid or Walgreens, so I settled for the Milani Easbrow. I don’t know if it’s because I’m out of practice using brow pencils, but I find this quite hard to use! The formula is a bit slippery, so on areas where I want just a hit of color, like the ends and very inner edges of my brows, it’s difficult to apply without getting a blob or a harsh pencil mark. The spoolie on the end blends the color out nicely, though.

Real Techniques “your base/flawless core collection” | I don’t know why, but it’s so hard to find Real Techniques brushes in NYC! Their website says they’re sold at Walgreens, but I’ve never actually seen them in a store. I found this set in Rite Aid of all places. You should have seen how quickly I snatched these up and put them in my basket. So far, I’ve only used the small detailer brush for concealing. It makes it really easy to apply concealer on the tiniest spots. This set also includes a pointed foundation brush, the ubiquitous buffing brush, and a contour brush. I feel like Real Techniques brushes have been reviewed and praised so much, that I don’t really need to go into more detail or post a full review on them.

NYX Butter Lipstick “Little Susie” | This is my first Butter Lipstick, and I’m impressed! I absolutely love the color. It’s like a dark, rosy pink/red. Gorgeous. The application isn’t the most amazing I’ve tried. I definitely have to blend it out with my fingers first, and then apply another layer to prevent it from settling into the lines on my lips right away. All in all, I would recommend it.

essie “bikini so teeny” | I had sworn off essie polishes after the first one I bought, called “bazooka”. I never expected to be disappointed by it because I hadn’t heard a single bad thing about essie polishes. I absolutely hated it though! The formula was runny, and it dried very, very dull, even with a top coat. I didn’t buy another one for an entire year, and then I was in Target and saw all the pretty colors. “It’s not fair to write off an entire brand because of one bad experience,” I thought to myself. “Bikini so teeny” is unlike any colors I currently own, so I picked it up hoping “bazooka” was just a fluke. I’m pleased to say “bikini so teeny” is a much better formula! For whatever reason, this color applies much easier, and dries nice and shiny. Unfortunately, it did chip on the second day, and by the end of the fourth, so much had chipped off, I had to take it off. I don’t think I’m going to waste another $8 on an essie polish when I can get a better one from Wet n’ Wild for $3.

L’Oréal EverSleek Reparative Smoothing Conditioner | I finished my Intense Smoothing Conditioner. I did like it, but I wanted to try something new, so I picked up the other conditioner in the EverSleek range. This conditioner seems a bit more mousse-like than the Intense Smoothing Conditioner, which is quite creamy and more liquidy. I think I found the Reparative conditioner easier to apply to all my lengths and ends. So far I like it.

Sonia Kashuk Large Angled Contour brush No. 113 | This is the first brush I bought specifically for contouring. Previously, I’d just been using a blush brush and scrunching it up to apply contour under my cheek bones. When I first opened the packaging of this brush, a few bristles immediately fell out. I was really disappointed, obviously. I’ve used it several times since then, and no more bristles have shed, and it’s definitely easier to apply bronzer with this than a blush brush! I think this is a good, inexpensive brush to try out if you’re new to contouring.

There you have it! Is there anyone else out there who hates essie polishes? What other drugstore products have you picked up recently?

I’m going to agree with kendelseigler, Bikini so Teeny is definitely a fav and Orly Bonder is really really good. I also use Seche Vite top coat and my manis last for 7-8 days. Seche Vite is pricey and it shrinks a bit but it makes a big difference 🙂

I use the Sally Hansen top coat in the red bottle which I heard was even better than Seche Vite, but I guess it’s not! I’m going to pick up those two things asap, thanks ladies 🙂
